5 Habits that Predisposes One to Stroke

Today am gonna move beyond the problems in the Nigerian health sector to some tips for healthy living. One needs to be alive to tackle the problems of the healthcare sector.
Infact the problems could even lead to stroke if given too much thought.

Stroke is an adverse health condition in which there is a weakness that is either transient or permanent to one side of the body, often associated with loss of speech. Some think its a disease of the elderly.
There is an increasing incidence of this disease in Nigeria especially among the younger age groups now.

So what predisposes one to having stroke?
1. Hypertension -this is a persistently elevated blood pressure..this increases the risk of stroke and as well contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. A lot of people walk about their normal daily activities without knowing the status of their blood pressure. Hypertension is a silent killer and can lead to sudden death amongst other things. It is advised that we monitor and maintain our BP to acceptable limits.

2. Smoking - cigarette contains tar which causes damages to the blood vessels, leading deposition of cholesterol and deposition of plaques  which block narrow blood vessels of the heart and brain leading to heart attacks and stroke.

3.High Cholesterol levels- this promotes cardiovascular diseases as a result of consumption of diets high in harmful fats. Moderate fat intake, exercise and sometimes medications can be used to reduce the cholesterol levels. Key is healthy foods and exercise.

4. Obesity- body mass index>30kg/m2 is associated with hypertension, ischaemic heart disease.diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, gallstones and osteoarthritis.

5. Stress- mental over-voltage can cause acute ischaemic stroke..

so in view of the above, an active lifestyle, moderate alcohol consumption, cessation of smoking and a visit to your doctor will go a long way in keeping you fit and less at risk for stroke.
Health is wealth.
