Report Shows Widespread Mistreatment by Health Workers During Childbirth

BY DENISE GRADY JUNE 30, 2015 They are slapped and pinched during labor, yelled at, denied pain medicine, neglected and forced to share beds with other women who just gave birth. And that is just a partial list of the abuses and humiliations inflicted on women around the world as their babies are born. A new report based on information from 34 countries, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, finds that “many women globally experience poor treatment during childbirth, including abusive, neglectful or disrespectful care.” This kind of mistreatment can drive women away from hospitals and undermine international goals of reducing deaths during childbirth — now about 300,000 a year. Most maternal deaths are preventable: They are caused by problems that can be treated, like bleeding, infection and high blood pressure. Often, to save the woman’s life, the care must be quick and expert. Health officials say the key to reducing maternal mortality is to increase the proportion of women

Cuba stamps out mother-to-child HIV By Michelle Roberts Health editor, BBC News online

Cuba has successfully eliminated mother-to-child transmission of both HIV and syphilis, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. The head of the WHO, Dr Margaret Chan, called it one of the greatest public health achievements possible. It follows years of efforts to give pregnant women early access to prenatal care, testing and drugs to stop these diseases passing from mother to child. The WHO hopes other countries will be able to achieve the same. Eliminating infections Every year, globally, around 1.4 million women living with HIV become pregnant. Untreated, they have a 15-45% chance of transmitting the virus to their children during pregnancy, labour, delivery or breastfeeding. That risk drops to about 1% if antiretroviral medicines are given to both mothers and their babies. And each year, nearly a million pregnant women worldwide are infected with syphilis. Again, early screening and treatment of these women can avoid complications for their unborn children. In Cuba, acc

Former Johns Hopkins Chief of Psychiatry DESTROYS ‘Caitlyn’ Jenner (MUST READ)

Dr. Paul R. McHugh, is a brilliant former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has written more than 125 peer-reviewed medical journal articles and has published six scholarly books. When it comes to former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner’s recent changes, he has things to say which will make liberals furious! McHugh reaffirms the obvious – changing the sex of a human is not possible. And, instead of a liberating sexual movement, those who think they are transgender are actually suffering from a life-destroying mental disorder. Wow! Take a look at what he has to say… While the Obama administration, Hollywood and major media such as Time magazine promote transgenderism as “normal,” said Dr. McHugh, these “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.” “This intensely felt sense

Nigeria doctors allege plot to incite healthworkers against Buhari

Nigerian resident doctors have alleged a plot to instigate health workers to embark on nationwide strike to frustrate the Muhammadu Buhari administration. The National Association of Resident Doctors said Wednesday in a communique after a meeting in Abuja that its members have rejected the plan, and were indeed ready to work with the new government. “There is also a hatchet plan to set Nigerian doctors against the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari by instigating NARD or NMA to declare a nationwide strike so that the government will be pressured to attend to their spurious claims of shortfall in 2015 personnel cost,” the union said. The group did not disclose the identity of those behind the plot. It pledged to support the administration and work towards improving healthcare delivery to the Nigerian people, to curtail foreign medical tourism. The doctors warned hospital authorities in the country against selective implementation of directives from the federal gove
