RE-EMERGENCE OF LASSA FEVER IN NIGERIA:OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE BY THE ASSOCIATION OF RESIDENT DOCTORS (ARD) FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER LOKOJA 26/1/16.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Medical Center, Lokoja is deeply worried by the reemergence of Lassa fever in Nigeria after the last outbreak in 2012 which claimed many lives. The Federal Ministry of Health has revealed that Lassa Fever has claimed 63 lives out of 212 suspected cases reported from 62 local government areas in affected states. So far, not less than 17 states have been affected over the last 8 weeks, including Bauchi, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Nasarawa, Lagos, Delta, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Zamfara and our dear Kogi. That an ailment which originated in the country about 47 years could resurface, despite advancement in medicine, shows that Nigeria’s healthcare system is weak in disease prevention and control. The death rate attributed to Lassa fever is currently put at 43.2 per cent, a rate considered very high by all standards. Fact sheets released by the United States Centre for Disease Prevention and Co...

#KetamineIsMedicine

Image
Goodevening guys, Recently you may have come across this hashtag #KetamineIsMedicine majorly among physician anaesthetists or nurse anaesthetist. This is a campaign by the World Federation of Societies of anaesthesiologist (WFSA) against the threat of international restrictions on ketamine. This is aimed to draw awareness to the fact that China is pushing for this wonder drug to be 'scheduled' by UN commission on Narcotic Drugs(CND), which will make this drug not readily available to poor resource countries which do not have the privilege of other good anaesthetic drugs of choice especially in emergency situations. China is leading in this internatioanl restrictions because it has a '#KetamineProblem'. it has become a leading recreational drug among its young people eclipsing heroin. Recreational ketamine is said to be produced at industrial scale in china. So are we going to restrict this drug just because china has a social problem with it, to the detriment of billi...

RE: PHYSICIAN,HEAL THYSELF

This is the titular theme of the recent joint communique released by Joint Health Sector Unions(JOHESU) and Assembly Of Healthcare professionals( AHPA). The paradox of the whole scenario is that Nigerian medical doctors are too busy with their patients and further researches to notice these their belligerent neighbours in the health sector. What do we hear on daily basis? NMA said this and doctors did that. Surprisingly ,my distinguished medical  elders have not joined and are not ready to join  issues with these their bellicose neighbours in the health sector. Is that not enough to tell this amorphous group that NMA is a noble association hence is not ready to reply people who behave and attack NMA  like motor park touts? This  reminds me the day we were about boarding a flight ,my friend mistakenly stepped on a girl .The girl in question started using abusive words on my friend without first politely  drawing my friend's attention to wha...

Report Shows Widespread Mistreatment by Health Workers During Childbirth

BY DENISE GRADY JUNE 30, 2015 They are slapped and pinched during labor, yelled at, denied pain medicine, neglected and forced to share beds with other women who just gave birth. And that is just a partial list of the abuses and humiliations inflicted on women around the world as their babies are born. A new report based on information from 34 countries, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, finds that “many women globally experience poor treatment during childbirth, including abusive, neglectful or disrespectful care.” This kind of mistreatment can drive women away from hospitals and undermine international goals of reducing deaths during childbirth — now about 300,000 a year. Most maternal deaths are preventable: They are caused by problems that can be treated, like bleeding, infection and high blood pressure. Often, to save the woman’s life, the care must be quick and expert. Health officials say the key to reducing maternal mortality is to increase the proportion of w...

Cuba stamps out mother-to-child HIV By Michelle Roberts Health editor, BBC News online

Cuba has successfully eliminated mother-to-child transmission of both HIV and syphilis, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. The head of the WHO, Dr Margaret Chan, called it one of the greatest public health achievements possible. It follows years of efforts to give pregnant women early access to prenatal care, testing and drugs to stop these diseases passing from mother to child. The WHO hopes other countries will be able to achieve the same. Eliminating infections Every year, globally, around 1.4 million women living with HIV become pregnant. Untreated, they have a 15-45% chance of transmitting the virus to their children during pregnancy, labour, delivery or breastfeeding. That risk drops to about 1% if antiretroviral medicines are given to both mothers and their babies. And each year, nearly a million pregnant women worldwide are infected with syphilis. Again, early screening and treatment of these women can avoid complications for their unborn children. In Cuba, acc...

Former Johns Hopkins Chief of Psychiatry DESTROYS ‘Caitlyn’ Jenner (MUST READ)

Dr. Paul R. McHugh, is a brilliant former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has written more than 125 peer-reviewed medical journal articles and has published six scholarly books. When it comes to former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner’s recent changes, he has things to say which will make liberals furious! McHugh reaffirms the obvious – changing the sex of a human is not possible. And, instead of a liberating sexual movement, those who think they are transgender are actually suffering from a life-destroying mental disorder. Wow! Take a look at what he has to say… While the Obama administration, Hollywood and major media such as Time magazine promote transgenderism as “normal,” said Dr. McHugh, these “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.” “This intensely felt s...

Nigeria doctors allege plot to incite healthworkers against Buhari

Nigerian resident doctors have alleged a plot to instigate health workers to embark on nationwide strike to frustrate the Muhammadu Buhari administration. The National Association of Resident Doctors said Wednesday in a communique after a meeting in Abuja that its members have rejected the plan, and were indeed ready to work with the new government. “There is also a hatchet plan to set Nigerian doctors against the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari by instigating NARD or NMA to declare a nationwide strike so that the government will be pressured to attend to their spurious claims of shortfall in 2015 personnel cost,” the union said. The group did not disclose the identity of those behind the plot. It pledged to support the administration and work towards improving healthcare delivery to the Nigerian people, to curtail foreign medical tourism. The doctors warned hospital authorities in the country against selective implementation of directives from the federal gove...
